HISTORY The name of this city comes from a combination of
Bernardo Yorba, a prominent land owner and "Linda" the spanish word for pretty.
A substantial number of Quakers from the midwest migrated to this part of Orange County.
Ranching, from Spanish colonial times to the early 1900's was the principal business in
Yorba Linda. Besides livestock, growing produce was important---mainly avocados, citrus,
tomatoes and cabbage.
Yorba Linda is the eastern terminus of the Imperial Highway, a 45 mile stretch of roadway
that reaches all the way to El Segundo, shere Los Angeles International Airport meets the
Pacific Ocean. The Imperial Highway Association first planned the route back in 1929, but
the last leg wasn't completed till the 1960's. This road that traverses two counties makes
for an interesting drive through Southern California's wide array of urban, suburban and
industrial communities.
In 1913 Richard Nixon, the 37th president of the United States, was born in Yorba
Linda. The family stayed in Yorba Linda for a decade and then moved to Whittier. His
birthplace has been restored, and the site was chosen for his presidental library.
