SANTA ANA ZOO
1801 E Chestnut Ave
Santa Ana, CA
(714) 836-4000
Hours: Daily 10 am to 5 pm
This is a tiny zoo, but provides an uncrowded, quiet place to take the kids for a close up
look at some extremely rare and endangered species. The zoo has a numger of exotic animals
that you won't necessarily find at the larger metropolitan zoos. For example, there is a
hyrax, a rare animal related to elephants that is no bigger than a rabbit. There are rare
birds such as the black currasow. But most impressive is the amazing collection of
primates, including ring tailing lemurs, colobus monkeys, guenons, langurs, capuchins,
macaques, gibbons, sakis and golden lion tamarins from South America that are smaller than
a house cat. The zoo is also home to African servals and a pair of mountain lions from
Southern California's own wilderness backyard. There is a barnyard petting zoo where
docents are available to answer questions. There are elephant rides and a small play area
for your toddler to run and play.

Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 10 am to 5 pm
Directions: Take Santa Ana (I-5) to 17th Street, turn right and then make another right at

The Bowers' permanent collection reflects the predominant cultures that helped shape early
California: the local Native American Indian tribes and the Spanish and Mexican influences
from the 1700's until 1850, when California became a state. But the Bowers is also
concerned with the collection, preservation and display of artifacts from many Pacific Rim
Cultures. Much of the art represents the lives of people as far away in space and time as
Australia and Melanesia of 40,000 years ago. Exhibitions on Columbian gold jewelry,
classic Chinese pottery and even African ceremonial masks, mix with the regular displays
of California Indian Culture.

a glimpse of Victorian life through artifacts, crafts, costumes, and special activities.
Scheduled tours offer what is called the basic "petticoats, butterchruns and
jacks" package--introductions to the inventions, skills and customs of the 19th
Century life. Other tours, offered to youth and scouting troops, give overviews of Orange
