San Clemente History
San Clemente was the vision of Ole Hansen, who founded the town in 1925. He created his
version of a coastline paradise along this stretch of hills that slope gently down to the
sea. When you survey the town from the freeway, you'll see residences ringing the
hillsides above the town's center, and palm trees polka-dotted among Spanish tile roofs.
On your way north out of town note the quaint architecture of the Ole Hansen Beach Club
located one half block west of El Camino Real on Avenida Pico. This bathing club dates
from the early part of this century, when it was used for the US Olympic swimming trails
for the 1932 Olympics held in Los Angeles. The Swimming pool is still in use, and the
clubs seaside vista makes it a popular spot for weddings and receptions.
