Directions-From the I-5, take the La Paz Rd exit and head west. Turn right at Aliso Creek Rd and then left onto Alicia Pkwy. The Park main entrance is about two-tenths of a mile on the right--look for Awma Rd, which is unpaved.
A huge undeveloped area along the San Joaquin Hills, Aliso/Wood Canyons is ideal for day hikes. From its heights you can see both the Saddleback Valley and the Pacific Ocean. There are biking, hiking and equestrian trails. You may want to consider the bike or horse route, because it takes a few miles to reach the really wild parts of this park. Many archaeological finds have been made here, relics from early days when Indians first hunted, gathered and fished in this part of California.

This park houses the city's recreation offices and features a excellent municipal swimming pool with a diving platform. The park is thrust against a green hillside with a landscaped botanical trail. A Large park with a 40 acre lake for fishing and boating. The lake is stocked with bass, catfish and trout.(You'll need a state fishing license unless you are under age 16). There are many areas in this 174 acres for ball playing, picnicing, jogging, and cycling. There are horseshoe pits here, too. This park is particularly attractive because it rests up against the San Joaquin Hills, providing access to lots of hilly areas for scenic contrast and hiking. Laguna Niguel also has a remote-control glider plan bluff at the north end of the park, where you're sure to see folks launching their model planes off the short cliff above Alicia Pkwy.

Chet Holifield Federal Building
Avila Rd and La Paz Rd, Laguna Niguel, CA
Directions-take the 1-5 south to La Paz Rd, exit and head west toward the ocean. Turn right at Avila Rd.
This is a regional branch office of our federal government, housing some National Archives material and other miscellaneous government documents. It was originally built for the aerospace firm Rockwell International. What makes the structure so distinctive is that it's a ziggurat-a stepped pyramid in the style of ancient Babylonia. It is easily the most unusual bit of architecture in South County.

The entrance to this fine golf course may be in Laguna Niguel, but the greens are in the midst of Dana Point and reach right to the beach. Expensive green fees reflect the quality of the outstanding views. Two holes are played right alongside the Pacific Ocean. The course was designed by Tent Jones, and, in the words of one Los Angeles Times golfing expert, the 16th hole is "extremely treacherous."
