Attractions,
Entertainment, and Points of Interests
Laguna Beach History
Laguna Beach has always attracted artists who were inspired by the sea. It was probably
inevitable that it would eventually become known as an "artist colony". In 1917
there was a resident community of 40 artists. Their interest in capturing the shifting
California colors along the bays and cliffs produced a style that is now labeled
California Impressionism. The by product of this community is the art galleries that fill
the town.
For years Laguna Beach had an official welcoming committee-a committee of one, that is.
"The Greeter" as he was affectionately known around these parts, was a old
gentleman by the name of Eiler Larsen, a Dane with hair below his shoulders and a great,
gray beard. He usually stood around the corner of Forest Ave and PCH, waving to everyone
as they zipped past along the highway. Eventually, the city council proclaimed Larsen as
the Official Greeter. He is gone, but not forgotten, as he is now immortalized in two
statues, one at the Greeter's Restaurant, another in front of the Pottery Shack. The
Greeter symbolizes welcome feeling that people sense when they come to Laguna Beach. A new
greeter, Mr. Number One Archer, has been welcoming folks to Laguna Beach since 1981 in the
same spot as Larsen. He always has a kind word for people who walk or motor by, and says
he's just carrying on the tradition.
When Hollywood "discovered" the scenic beauty of Laguna, may of the big stars
kept homes here: Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Judy Garland, Bette Davis, Rudolph
Valentino. Today's stars, such as Bette Midler, have homes here as well. Former astronaut
Buzz Aldrin also lives in Laguna Beach.
Dog Park
Laguna Canyon Rd, Laguna Beach, CA
Directions-From PCH in Laguna Beach, take Broadway inland(which becomes Laguna Canyon Rd)
for two miles and look for the park behind a chain link fence on you right. From Irvine or
Laguna Hills take Laguna Canyon Rd toward PCH and the park will be about one half mile
past El Toro Rd.
This is just what its name says-a park for your dog. A local utility company loaned two
grassy acres to the city for this purpose, so now people come here daily so their dogs can
run and romp with their four legged friends. Here you can let your pooch off the leash to
just go wild doing what dogs like to do. The dogs love playing with each other, and the
contrast in sizes and breeds is fun to see. This place is also a popular place for local
dog owners to meet other local dog owners. Everyone cleans up their own dog's mess, and
litter bags and receptacles are handily provided at the entrance of the gate.
