HISTORY
Brea means "Tar" in Spanish. No one but rancheros paid much attention to the
foothills of Brea until it was discovered in 1895 that they were rich with oil. It
wouldn't of been a surprise to the Early Americans who used it for medical purposes.
Mexican and Spanish settler used the sticky soil to water proof their roofs. But once the
Union Oil Companies discovered the oil in the land in the 1900's, oil derricks mushroomed
in and around the foothills of Brea. In 1916 Brea incorporated as one of Orange County's
eight cities.
CARBON CANYON REGIONAL PARK
4422 Carbon Canyon Road
Brea, CA
(714) 996-5252
The equestrian, hiking and biking trails in this park are perfect for a day of excercise
in the country. There is a particularly good cycling trail that originates in this park,
provided you have a mountian bike. To find the begining of the trail, park to the left of
the park entrance and follow the dirt path farther east that parallels Carbon Canyon Road.
Take the first dirt road that forks to the right and follow it past the streambed and
orange grove. At the base of a hillside is Telegraph Canyon Trail. It will take you to the
summit of Chino Hills State Park, 10,000 acres of wilderness which stretches throughout
neighboring San Bernardino, Los Angeles, and Riverside Counties. From here you can see the
beautiful mountians in all directions. This is a 12 mile round trip.
Carbon Canyon has nearly 200 redwoods, that were planted in 1975. These dry, sage covered
canyon areas are not the natural home of the redwoods, but the experiment has worked well
in Carbon Canyon. The only thing the park rangers do in the way of extra care is spray the
trees occasionally to remove dirt that accumulates from the smog. Otherwise they don't
require any special assistance.
